Improved ECG & IMU Data Logger for Movesense Flash Now Available

An updated version of the Python-based ECG and IMU data logger for the Movesense Flash sensor is now available. The tool is designed to make offline recording of physiological and biomechanical data with Movesense Flash simpler and more accessible for developers, researchers, and product teams.

The Movesense Flash Datalogger GUI allows you to configure and record single-channel ECG, heart rate, and inertial measurement data (IMU) directly on the sensor, without continuous Bluetooth streaming. This makes it especially well suited for long recordings, challenging environments, and use cases where reliable wireless connectivity is not available.

The update brings three key improvements to the tool. First, CSV conversion optimization significantly speeds up processing of large files. The app also now remains responsive even during long downloads.

Second, the new progress bar clearly illustrates the progress of the data download. Transferring a large amount of data from the sensor via a wireless Bluetooth connection can take minutes, or up to half an hour if the memory is full. A good progress indicator helps scheduling other tasks while data is being downloaded.

The third new feature is a battery level indicator. The indicator will turn red if there is a risk that the battery voltage is too low for reliable download. This helps ensuring that the sensor has enough power to transfer the recorded data, but is also very useful for managing the battery capacity of sensors going into the field.

The tool is based on Movesense’s open GATT SensorData Protocol (GSP) and works with the default Movesense Flash firmware 2.3.x and later. It brings a graphical user interface to the previously released Python tool. Through a simple graphical user interface, users can start and stop recordings, configure logging parameters, and retrieve recorded files for further analysis.

As part of the Movesense open ecosystem, the tool is free to use and open source, allowing you to modify and extend it for your own workflows.

Unobtrusive long-term recording of heart rate, HRV, ECG, and movement data

Movesense Flash is a small, versatile, and extremely durable sensor capable of recording accurate 1-lead ECG, heart rate intervals, and movement data for post-analysis. Thanks to its large internal memory, Movesense Flash is able to record physiological and biomechanical data independently without constant connection to a receiving device. The only thing to carry with you for logging highly accurate data is a lightweight (9.4g/0.33oz) sensor button.

The Movesense Flash’s memory can store up to five days of single-channel ECG or heart rate intervals for over four months – although for heart rate interval recording the battery must be replaced approximately once a month. Acceleration data can be logged for four days at a sample rate of 26 Hz. For 9-axis motion data (acceleration, gyro, magnetometer) at 52 Hz, the capacity is enough for almost 19 hours.

Wide range of applications in sports, wellness, health and research

The ability of Movesense Flash to record movement, heart rate and ECG data for long periods of time discreetly and without user interaction opens up interesting use cases in measuring daily activity, stress and recovery, and various health aspects. The range of potential  applications includes Holter-type ECG analysis, sports performance monitoring, rehabilitation, motion research, and algorithm development, to name a few.

One of the recent implementations that utilizes the standalone data logging of Movesense Flash is the aquatic rehabilitation solution HydroPower announced by GoodBoost this January. Movesense Flash offered a unique platform for HydroPower to record underwater motion data for objective assessment and optimization of hydrotherapy.
